Post-Appointment Care Instructions • Digital Dental Practice

Review procedure-specific recovery guidelines below to ensure optimal healing and long-term success for your dental restoration.

Composite (Tooth-Colored) Filling

  • Eating: You may eat once the local anesthesia numbness wears off. If you are hungry beforehand, choose foods that do not require chewing, such as yogurt, smoothies, protein shakes, warm (not hot) soup, or beverages.
  • Sensitivity: Mild sensitivity to pressure, cold, or heat is completely normal for a few days. Your gums may also feel tender. If your symptoms improve incrementally each day, continue monitoring; otherwise, contact our office.
  • Bite: If your bite feels uneven or high after the numbness wears off, call us immediately for a quick, precise adjustment.
  • Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss normally. Avoid sticky or hard foods for 24 hours while initial tenderness subsides.

Bioclear Restorations

  • Eating: You may eat once numbness wears off. Stick to non-chewing options initially (smoothies, protein shakes, yogurt, lukewarm soup).
  • Sensitivity: Mild temperature or pressure sensitivity is expected for several days. Symptoms should steadily improve daily.
  • Bite: If your bite feels uneven, contact our office right away for adjustment.
  • Oral Hygiene: Maintain normal brushing and flossing routines. Avoid sticky or hard foods for the first 24 hours.
  • Dietary Staining Warning: Please note that Bioclear composite restorations can permanently stain from smoking or heavy consumption of coffee, dark juices, red wine, turmeric, or other highly pigmented foods and beverages.

Deep Cleaning (Scaling and Root Planing)

  • Sensitivity: Teeth and gums may feel sensitive and tender for a few days. Use a desensitizing toothpaste if needed.
  • Gums: Minor bleeding during brushing, flossing, or chewing is normal for the first few days.
  • Rinse: Perform warm salt water rinses (1 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) 2 to 3 times per day.
  • Oral Hygiene: Brush and floss gently but thoroughly using a soft-bristled manual toothbrush or an electric toothbrush on a gentle setting.

Teeth Whitening

While some patients enjoy permanent results, whitening maintenance can be supported at home using take-home touch-up trays or in-office enhancement systems. Pre-existing tooth sensitivity may flare up transiently and is easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers or non-whitening Sensodyne toothpaste.

Strict Post-Whitening Dietary Guidelines (First 48–72 Hours): Avoid all dark-pigmented items, including red wine, black tea, coffee, berries, soy sauce, mustard, ketchup, colas, red sauces, colorful mouth rinses, and tobacco products. If consuming anything potentially staining, rinse your mouth with water immediately.

Recommended White/Clear Diet: Focus on milk, water, clear soda, bananas, peeled apples, white bread, flour tortillas, oatmeal, cream of wheat, white rice, baked potatoes, plain pasta with white sauce, turkey, chicken, white fish, plain yogurt, white cheese, sour cream, and cottage cheese.

Final and Temporary Crowns Placement

  • Eating: If numb, do not chew until feeling returns (opt for non-chewing soft foods). If not numb, wait at least 1 hour before eating. Avoid hard and sticky foods altogether for the first 24 hours.
  • Sensitivity: Temperature and pressure sensitivity are common for a few days. Monitor for steady improvement.
  • Bite Check: If your crown feels high or your bite is misaligned, contact us immediately for an adjustment.
  • Oral Hygiene: For the first 24 hours, brush very gently around the crown using a manual toothbrush (turn off electric toothbrushes near the site). Floss gently into gum pockets using string floss, pulling the floss out sideways rather than snapping upward.

Note: If you have a temporary crown, follow these instructions until your permanent restoration is placed. If a temporary crown breaks or dislodges, contact our office immediately.

Tooth Extractions

  • Bleeding: Bite firmly on gauze for 30 to 60 minutes. Slight oozing is normal for 24 to 48 hours.
  • Strict Avoidance: Do not smoke, drink through a straw, spit forcefully, or rinse vigorously for the first 48 hours to prevent painful dry sockets.
  • Pain Management: Take prescribed medications as directed and apply ice packs externally for swelling. If pain intensifies or fails to subside, contact us immediately, as a dry socket may require treatment.
  • Hygiene: Avoid brushing the extraction site directly for 24 hours. Begin gentle warm salt water rinses 2 to 3 times per day starting the next day.
  • Eating: Avoid small, grainy foods (rice, lentils, tomatoes) that can lodge in the extraction socket, as well as hard, chewy, hot foods and alcohol.

Implant Placement

  • Bleeding & Swelling: Mild bleeding and localized swelling are normal. Use gauze pressure and cold compresses as needed.
  • Diet: Stick to a soft-food diet for 3 to 5 days. Avoid hot, spicy, or hard foods and alcoholic beverages.
  • Medications: Strictly follow prescribed antibiotic and pain medication regimens.
  • Hygiene: Keep the surgical site clean, but avoid direct brushing for the first few days. Use a soft manual toothbrush or turn off electric toothbrushes near the implant site.
  • Absolute Prohibition: No smoking whatsoever, as nicotine and carbon monoxide can prevent osseointegration (bone fusion).

Implant Restoration (Crown on Implant Abutment)

  • Sensitivity: Mild localized pressure is normal as surrounding tissues adjust to the new crown contour.
  • Bite: Contact us immediately if your bite feels uneven.
  • Cleaning: Utilize string floss, interdental brushes, and water flossers daily. Brush normally using a soft manual or electric toothbrush.

Root Canal Treatment

  • Pain & Soreness: Mild soreness around the treatment site—including slight tenderness when biting—is normal for a few days. Monitor for steady improvement and contact us if pain worsens.
  • Temporary Filling: If a temporary filling was placed, avoid heavy chewing on that specific side until your permanent restoration is finalized.
  • Eating: Follow numbness guidelines (no chewing while numb). If a temporary filling is present, chew on the opposite side.
  • >Restoration Warning: A permanent crown or Bioclear restoration is typically required following root canal therapy to protect the tooth from fracture. Schedule this placement promptly.
  • Oral Hygiene: Resume normal brushing and flossing unless specifically directed otherwise.

LASER Periodontal Pocket Treatment

  • Discomfort: Mild, manageable soreness for 24 to 48 hours is normal.
  • Diet: Stick to soft, cool foods during the first 24 hours.
  • Hygiene: Avoid direct brushing and flossing of the treated laser site for 24 hours or as specifically instructed. Use prescribed antimicrobial mouth rinses.
  • Avoidance: Refrain from smoking and alcohol for at least 48 hours to optimize soft-tissue healing.

Orthodontic Treatment (Braces or Clear Aligners)

  • Soreness: Mild to moderate discomfort is expected following the placement or adjustment of orthodontic wires, brackets, or Invisalign attachments. Over-the-counter pain relievers can be used as needed.
  • Diet (Braces): Avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods. Cut hard foods into smaller, manageable pieces.
  • Diet (Invisalign): Never eat food or consume hot/colored beverages while wearing your aligners (cold water only).
  • Cleaning: Brush and floss daily. Incorporate interdental brushes and water flossers alongside your electric toothbrush. Clean Invisalign aligners daily using a soft toothbrush and gentle toothpaste.
  • Wear Time: Wear Invisalign aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day. If an attachment or aligner is lost or damaged, contact our office promptly.
